Trintellix: A Newer Option for Depression and Anxiety
What to know about this multimodal antidepressant
When standard antidepressants haven't provided adequate relief, newer medications like Trintellix may offer hope. At Next Step Psychiatry in Lilburn, Dr. Aneel Ursani and Fathima Chowdhury, PA-C help patients throughout Gwinnett County explore all treatment options for depression and anxiety.
What Is Trintellix?
Trintellix (vortioxetine), approved in 2013, is a newer antidepressant that works differently from traditional SSRIs. It's called a "multimodal" antidepressant because it affects the brain in multiple ways—both preventing serotonin reabsorption and directly stimulating serotonin receptors.
What Does Trintellix Treat?
- Major depressive disorder (MDD) - FDA-approved use
- Generalized anxiety disorder - prescribed off-label based on clinical evidence
- Depression with anxiety symptoms - studies show effectiveness for combined symptoms
How to Take Trintellix
Trintellix comes in 10mg, 20mg, and 40mg tablets, taken once daily with food. Your psychiatrist will typically start at 10mg and adjust based on your response. The maximum dosage is 20mg daily.
How Long Does It Take to Work?
You may notice improvements as early as 2 weeks, with full effects typically felt by 6-8 weeks. Keep taking the medication consistently even if you don't see immediate results.
Potential Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Nausea (often improves with time)
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Dry mouth and headache
- Changes in sleep patterns
Trintellix may have fewer side effects than some traditional antidepressants, particularly regarding sexual dysfunction—a concern for many patients.
Is Trintellix Right for You?
Trintellix may be a good option if you've struggled with side effects from other antidepressants or haven't achieved adequate relief. Only a qualified psychiatrist can determine if it's appropriate for your specific situation.
