Pristiq (Desvenlafaxine): A Guide to This SNRI
At Next Step Psychiatry in Lilburn, we work with patients to find the right medication for their needs. Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is an SNRI that's FDA-approved for depression and often prescribed off-label for anxiety.
How Pristiq Works
Pristiq is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It increases levels of both serotonin and norepinephrine in your brain by preventing their reabsorption—affecting mood, alertness, and attention.
What It Treats
FDA-approved for major depressive disorder, Pristiq is also used off-label for generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, and panic disorder.
Dosing
Pristiq comes as an extended-release tablet, typically starting at 50 mg daily. Unlike some other antidepressants, higher doses haven't proven more effective and may cause more side effects.
How Long Until It Works?
Some improvement may appear within a week, but full effects typically take 8 weeks. Be patient and don't stop the medication early.
Common Side Effects
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Sweating
- Insomnia or drowsiness
- Decreased appetite
- Sexual dysfunction
Most side effects improve within the first week or two.
Important Considerations
Pristiq should not be combined with MAOIs or other medications that increase serotonin due to risk of serotonin syndrome. Always inform your psychiatrist of all medications and supplements you take.
